Books About Pioneer Girls

                                                                             Laura Ingalls Wilder

The Laura Ingalls Wilder series is about a little girl who starts out as Laura Ingalls and gradually grow up to be a school teacher and then a farmer’s wife and a mother of one child.  I recommend this series for girls who are adventureous, because Laura was an adventureous girl. My favorite book in the series is probably “The First Four Years”.

                                                                               Caddie Woodlawn

Caddie Woodlawn is a tomboy, and she and her two brothers are always getting into trouble.  She has one other brother, who is a baby.  She also has three sisters.  I recommend this book for girls who are tomboys and for girls who sometimes get into trouble.  My favorite part of the book is probably when Uncle Edmund loosens the roes on the raft that hold the raft together, and Caddie falls off.

Schools

You might go to a one room schoolhouse.  Your teacher would sit in the front of the room at a big desk.  Almost all of the students would sit on long benches with desks in front of them.  The smallest students would sit in the front of the room with no desks.  Older students would sit toward the back of the room.  Students were arranged by age, from smallest to oldest.

Homes

If you lived in the woods, you might live in a log house when you first start living in the area.  If you lived near a creek or spring, you might start out with a house made out of sod, which is rough prarie soil, and then move into a log house after a while. If you lived in the dry part of the prarie, you might live in a log house when you first start living in the area, like if you lived in the woods.

Food

If you lived in the woods, you might have deer and bear meat every night for dinner.  If you lived on the dry part of the prarie, you might have a lot of salt pork and beans.  If you lived near a creek or spring, you might have a lot of fish.

Entertainment

If you were living in the woods, you might play outdoors in a little clearing by your house.     If you lived by a creek or spring, you might play in it every day.

Dangers

There were many dangers.  If you lived in the woods, you would have to look out for bears and wolves.  If you lived in the dry part of the prarie, you would have to look out for wolves, cyclones and prarie fires.  If you lived near a creek or spring, you would have to look out for leeches and storms that could flood the creek or spring.
